I find out who has lived in your house and the lives they led, from census returns, trade directories, newspapers and old maps, then write it up as your home’s biography and post it to you as a printed A4 coffee-table keepsake.
What you get
- A story of your house written through time: where it stands, and the people who lived there, brought to life
- A clear timeline of owners and occupants, so the generations are easy to follow at a glance
- Historic maps showing your plot and street as they changed, decade by decade
- Your home’s biography, professionally printed as an A4 coffee-table keepsake, ready to keep or gift
- An artist’s impression of your home as a watercolour, printed and posted to you
How it works
- You order and tell me the address.
- I research your house in the census, maps, the 1910 survey where it is online, directories and newspapers, over 2 weeks.
- Your home’s biography is posted to you, with the watercolour of your house.
Is my house old enough?
Houses built before 1921 give the richest results, because they appear in the census returns, and houses built up to 1945 are still in the 1939 Register and on the old maps. If yours was built after 1945, What Was Here Before tells the story of the land your house stands on, for £49.
A Christmas present? Order by 3 December and it arrives in time.
Questions
- Do you need the deeds?
- They help but aren’t essential. If you have them, wonderful. If not, Land Registry title records and the records above usually carry the story.
- Is this a good gift?
- One of the best, particularly for a new home, an anniversary in a long-loved one, or anyone who says they have everything. See gift vouchers.
- Can I get it faster?
- Yes. Express delivery is available for £20, guaranteeing your finished house history within 7 days rather than the standard two weeks. It’s offered as an option at checkout.
